HyNEAT – Hydrogen-Powered Aviation

Project Description:

HyNEAT, short for “Hydrogen Supply Networks’ Evolution for Air Transport,” is an interdisciplinary BMBF collaborative project.

The project develops concepts for global hydrogen supply infrastructures for use in H2-powered aircraft. The goal is to identify long-term prospects and possible transition pathways in line with a global energy transition and to derive recommendations for action for policymakers and industry. Three levels of analysis are examined: global H2 potential for aviation; the European energy system and its associated sphere of influence, including countries in Africa and the Middle East; and a local implementation plan for a typical airport. In our subproject, we evaluate the hydrogen components and systems of the supply chain using life cycle assessment.
