Re3dOx – Life Cycle Assessment of Redox-Flow Batteries

Project Description:

Re3dOx stands for recycling and resource efficiency in redox flow batteries. The vanadium redox flow battery (VFB) can make a significant contribution to the energy transition, as this promising energy storage technology is particularly well-suited for stationary energy storage on an industrial scale due to its unique properties. The goal of this project was to investigate the recyclability and resource efficiency of relevant VFB stack components

A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) system model of the VFB was developed. The various recycling pathways for system components were mapped within the model. Based on this, different end-of-life options were analyzed, and potential environmental impacts as well as CO2 reduction potentials were quantified.
