ColteraTREC is a Horizon Pathfinder project funded by the European Innovation Council and the Executive Agency for SMEs (Project No.: 101161366). It launched in May 2025 with a duration of three years. The goal is to contribute to the transition toward sustainable
cooling by developing an alternative to conventional compression refrigeration cycles and harmful refrigerants.
ColteraTREC utilizes the technology of a thermally regenerative electrochemical cycle (TREC) with state-of-the-art electrolytes for
highly efficient thermodynamics and high power densities. These systems are lightweight, cost-effective, and free of critical raw materials.
At Clausthal University of Technology, the potential environmental impacts of this new technology are being analyzed prospectively (prospective Life Cycle Assessment, pLCA). The findings are incorporated into the development and scale-up process of the ColteraTREC system and help make a sustainable electrochemical energy technology market-ready.
